Road Trip Fun
My friend Liz and I decided to take a roadtrip adventure. We left after work on Thursday and made our way to Luray, VA. We rented an AirStream in a campground. It was small, cute, and adequate for our stay. The campground was really neat and had a lot of different lodging options and activities. Our friends Carol and Jeanne were on their way back from a roadtrip from Vegas and decided to meet up with us on our adventures. They rented a cottage in the same campground as us. It was awesome because they had a screened porch and it rained both evenings.

Friday morning we got up and out bright and early so that we could watch the sunrise in Shenandoah National Park. We made it to two different overlooks to watch the sun come up. We did three hikes and several overlooks. We packed a picnic lunch and ate at a table at the Big Meadows. We saw lots of deer, chipmunks, and squirrels. However, we did not see any bears! After a long day on the trails, we came back to the campground and walked down to the river where we put our feet in and hung out for awhile. We ordered pizza to be delivered and enjoyed it, some drinks, and games on their front porch.

Saturday morning we checked out of our accommodations and headed over to Luray Caverns. It was a cold rainy day so a perfect day to be in the caverns. I found the caverns to be quite fascinating. This was a self guided tour so we could go at our own pace. After the caverns, Jeanne and Carol took off to Carol’s home in Delaware. Liz and I decided to take advantage of our entry ticket for the old car museum. We were surprised at how we actually enjoyed this. Before making our way to our next step in Delaware, Liz and I took a quick drive through historic Luray. It looked like a cute town that would be fun to explore if we had more time.

We made it to Carol’s house in Delaware and unloaded our stuff. Shortly after, we hoped back in the car and headed to Rehoboth Beach to explore. We went to the boardwalk, visited the shops of Penny Lane, tried the famous Thrashers fries (delicious), had dinner, and enjoyed frozen custard from Kohr Bros. We went back to Carol’s and played games until bedtime.

Sunday morning was another early start. We put on our marching Girls Trip shirts and headed to Cape Deli for breakfast. We took it to go and went to the Ferry terminal for our trip over to Cape May, NJ. Liz brought mini Uno with her and that kept us entertained on our trip over. Once we landed, we made our way to the Cape May Lighthouse. Liz, Carol, and myself climbed to the top. It was cold, windy, and rainy.

Next on our adventure list was riding a rail bike. The weather was crappy but YOLO, so we decided to embrace the adventure and go anyways. We were prepared with changes of clothes in the car for afterwards. We were the only ones that booked a ride so we had an exclusive trip. We rented a four seater so we could all chat during the ride. The guides were troopers and assured me they didn’t “hate” us for booking in the rain. They let 7s go at our own pace and they were informative about the history of the tracks and about the butterfly conservation garden. We all had a great time. Once our ride was complete, we changed clothes and headed into town to visit some of the shops.

When we were done shopping we made our way to Willow Creek Winery for lunch and wine. It was Sangria Sunday and we partook in flights of sangria with our lunch. The property was beautiful, the food was alright, and the wine was meh. Next, since we had some time to kill before our ferry ride back, we visited Cold Spring Brewery. It was an old barn converted into a brewery. A neat place for sure. There were two Great Danes in there and one of them was name Moose! Once we were back on the ferry, we broke out some games (Tapple and Taco Cat Goat Cheese Pizza). We were laughing so hard and having so much fun that it drew the attention of several riders and gave us an audience. We actually ended up inviting two ladies to join us in the games because they seemed so interested. Then it was back to Carol’s for games and drinks on our last evening.

Monday morning it was another early start. Liz, Jeanne, and I got out early to head home. But before making the trip home, we had yet one more stop! Assateague National Seashore in Maryland. Our goal was to see wild horses and we met that goal even before we entered the park. We also saw a small herd of deer as we entered the park. Once inside, we made our way to the end and then proceeded to do the three trails they had. Life of the Dunes, Life of the Forest, and Life of the Marsh. They were all very well maintained and each offered something a little different. We did see several horses once inside the park, but our favorite encounter was in the way out. We saw a horse scratching his butt on a tree and while we were watching him, we could hear horses neighing in the woods. We drove off but decided to turn around because we saw a small foal and continued to hear neighing from the woods. Shortly after, mom came out of the woods and the baby went over and began to nurse. It was such a cool thing to watch. We stopped at the visitor’s center on the way out because it was not open yet when we got to the park. Then, it was time to make our journey back home to NC. We chose to go the “scenic” route and not the boring 95 route. This meant that we got to go through the Chesapeake Bay Bridge/Tunnel. I’ve been through it before but it’s still a neat thing to experience.

What a trip! I’m so thankful for friends that are willing to go on adventures like this. It’s really hard for Liz and me to take extended trips because of work, but we always try to make the most of our time and see/do as much as possible all while having fun doing it. Can’t wait for the next one!
