Southern Coastal Maine
It was another beautiful cold day here in Maine. We decided to take this opportunity to see a few sites on the southern coast of Maine.
Our first stop was Blowing Cave Park in Kennebunkport, Maine. The rock formations here are supposed to cause dramatic wave crashes and sea spray, but today the water was way too calm for any of that. It was a beautiful spot even without the spray. It is right across the water from the Bush Compound, the summer home of George H. W. Bush.
Our next stop was Cape Neddick Nubble Lighthouse. It was a cute little lighthouse on an island just offshore. Surprisingly, there were people in the water scuba diving. I was frozen just thinking about them in that water! They, too, had a cute little lobster Christmas Tree.
We headed a little further south to check out the Wiggly Bridge. The website says it may be the world’s smallest suspension bridge. It’s only 75 feet long. The York River is on one side and a mill pond on the other. We walked (bounced) across it and walked the short path around the nature preserve on the other side. It was fun to bounce along the bridge.
After the Wiggly Bridge we took a very short drive over to York Harbor to walk the Cliff Walk. It’s a short walk right of the edge of the rocks above the ocean. Parts of the walk were rocky, some were muddy, and some were smooth cement. There were some beautiful views.
We decided to head back home after this as the sun would soon be setting. We took a scenic drive back through some quaint little beach towns. Most of the shops, restaurants, etc had signs that said closed for the season. I can imagine that they are extremely busy during the summer months. Before calling it a day, we chose to squeeze in one more lighthouse before dark. Cape Elizabeth Lighthouse. We made it there right at sunset. You can’t get close to the lighthouse because it is now private property. But we did get to see it and a beautiful sunset.
We packed a lot of sightseeing into today and enjoyed all of it. Can’t wait to see what we will explore next!
