Long Weekend Adventure, Part 1
Today we set off on our long weekend adventure. We are planning on doing some exploring in the northern middle part of Maine. The biggest goal for the weekend is to see a moose!! We did some research and found which areas of the state we are more likely to achieve our goal. Some parts of our trip may be on unpaved roads in unknown conditions so we chose to rent a car for the weekend to spare our car.
We started the day by picking up our rental car, an all wheel drive Subaru Outback and a dozen donuts from Krispy Kreme (they are few and far between in Maine and so much better than Dunkin Doughnuts). We were going to head to a nature preserve next to do some snowshoeing but they did not staff the equipment rental building due to the rain so we will try again later in the weekend.
Since we had some extra time because we didn’t go snowshoeing we decided to take a drive to look around. While on our drive, the road suddenly went to only one plowed lane because the other lane was prepped for snowmobiles. We found another road that paralleled the one we were on, only it wasn’t paved. No worries, that’s why we rented a car. There were LOTS of potholes and puddles. We played the game of how deep is the puddle. All the while we had our eyes peeled for moose. Alas, I saw a body! After a controlled abrupt application of the brakes and a quick shift to reverse, we were able to see 2 DEER hanging out. Sadness! My heart was pounding because I was so hoping it was going to be a moose. Oh well… on our continued journey we came across two really large puddles. We had no idea how deep they were so we hugged the edges and hoped for the best. We didn’t have any problems. When we realized that it would be getting dark soon, we turned around and headed back to our hotel for the evening.
View from the window in our hotel room.
Some pictures from our drive. We drove through rain, snow, sleet, and at times a combination of them all.
My foot was bothering me on our drive back so I switched from my hiking shoe to my regular shoe to finish the drive. We stopped at a grocery store to get bread to make lunches for the weekend and walking in, Scott pointed to my feet. I forgot to change back. Haha. Oh well.
We will continue exploring tomorrow and fingers crossed that we get to see a moose!
