The Outer Banks
This weekend we decided to spend a day driving along the Outer Banks. We left right after work on Friday and headed north.
When we got to our stop for the night, we were treated to a pretty sunset.
We went for a walk for some ice cream and we went by the Wright Brothers Monument.
We got up early this morning, had breakfast, and drove north to Corolla. Corolla is known for its wild horses on the beach but the beach is only accessible by 4 wheel drive vehicles so we couldn’t go out on the beach. We did stop at the Currituck Beach Lighthouse.
We got to drive through some neat little towns along our drive. One of the busiest towns was Duck. There were lots of shops and places to eat along a bike/walking trail.
After visiting Corolla and the lighthouse, we turned around and made our way south along the Cape Hatteras National Seashore. We stopped at our second lighthouse of the day, Bodie Island Light Station. The area around this lighthouse was beautiful. There was a boardwalk that went out over the marsh and we were able to see fish, crabs, and birds.
Our journey south continued… we stopped in Pea Island to see the house that was used in the movie Nights in Rodanthe. It had to be moved so that it didn’t get swallowed by the ocean.
We made it Cape Hatteras Lighthouse, which was our southernmost destination on the Outer Banks. This lighthouse had to be moved about 20 years ago to prevent it from getting swallowed by the ocean. This lighthouse is beautiful! The base of it is prettier than any other lighthouse we have seen.
After visiting the lighthouse, we turned around and headed back north. On our way back, we stopped to check out the beach and the huge sand dunes. The dunes came all the way to the road. They were the tallest dunes that I have ever had to climb to get to the beach. I’m not even sure how the people got down to the water once they climbed to the top.
We had a great day doing a little sightseeing in the Outer Banks. I can’t believe that I’ve lived in N.C. most of my life and I had never been here before. I would love to go back when we had more time, but at least now we can say we have been there. Also, we added 3 more lighthouses to our list!
