Stede Bonnet

This year my friends Jay and Chelsea once again decided to use their sailboat for the annual Stede Bonnet sailboat race. Jay, Chelsea, and I started the morning with breakfast at Saucy Southerner and then went down to Provision for the Captain’s meeting. It is here that we got our morning cocktails and our start times and race course. Once the meeting was over, we went back home to get into our pirate regalia. The weather looked to be a most beautiful day. Everyone met at the boat and we all got settled in and received our posts and instructions from captain Jay. I brought along a pirate flag that we hoisted and a skeleton that we tied to the mast. We headed out into the intracoastal to get in position to cross the start line at our scheduled time. While letting out the Jib, the line from the sail came across the boat and decapitated the skeleton. Someone will find that skull at the bottom of the water and probably have some questions. We began the race and waved to all the spectators cheering us on. We made it to the buoy where we were to turn around and we were all very excited since we didn’t even leave the marina last year. Once we turned around, the out going current from the river and the wind were proving to make our return trip much more difficult. We eventually caved, and started the motor, disqualifying us from the race. We had a blast. When we docked the boat, we then headed to Provison for the pirate party and free meal. I kinda felt like a big deal, because they let the pirates who participated in the race go to the front of a very long line. We enjoyed some food, drinks, dancing, and laughter until we called it a night.
